Sheriff Says Hard Drug Use Fueling Burglary And Theft Problem On Vashon Island

There's been a recent increase in burglaries and thefts on Vashon Island. Normally Vashon is a peaceful place with little crime. Home for lots of happy go lucky artist types.

But Islanders fed up with several recent rather dramatic burglaries organized a public forum to discuss the problem. Sgt Calvin Beringer from the King County Sheriff's Department briefed a crowd of over 100 Islanders on Monday night at the first public meeting of the group. Beringer talked about the scope of the problem and even indicated that deputies have a good idea who the perpetrators may be. The police continue to build a case against these suspects. The police also believe that heroin and meth use has lead to the rise in thefts and burglaries on the Island.

The forum was organized by a few of Vashon's concerned citizens. The group called itself Vashon Says No To Crime. With the help of the Vashon Maury Island Community Council they have planned a follow-up meeting for 7pm on October 28th at the main fire station. All are welcome.
